Nazi Zombies Official Game Trailers

The Zombies

Zombies
, also known as either Nazi Zombies or Imperial Zombies depending on their origin, are the remains of dead German and Japanese World War II soldiers who were reanimated by unknown means.

It is never clearly explained how the zombies were reanimated, (it might be explained in Der Riese but an Easter egg in Shi No Numa could tell us a little about it.

One theory of how the bodies of dead Nazi or Imperial soldiers are reanimated is that, towards the end of World War II, German tests and experiments with high levels of radiation on human subjects may have led to the reanimation. The zombies seem to have reverted to a primal cognitive state, as they will attempt to kill or incapacitate any human through melee attacks. They are unable, or possibly unwilling, to use any weapons, and will neither dodge bullets nor avoid grenades. Even when both legs are blown off, the zombies will continue to crawl and attempt to kill any live human. The zombies also show an odd behavioral characteristic in the sense that they will not attack a human being that is dying, yet instead go for the humans still alive. It is unknown why this is done, but it may be a thought process in what's left of their primal mind that the humans that are still healthy pose them a threat.

It is possible that the zombies attack the humans because the zombies used to be Nazis and Japanese and that they were killed by allied soldiers, so they use what is left on their mind is to seek vengeance on the allies. However, this seems unlikely because Takeo in "Shi No Numa" is Japanese, like the zombies; Richtofen is German, however, and the Germans were Japan's allies during the war, yet the zombies attack him as well. It's most likely that the zombies have no true allegiance and attack any living human beings regardless of their faction.

Some zombies will die from only a few rounds from a M1911, while other zombies can withstand up to or exceeding two blasts from a Ray gun. Zombies also have varying movement speeds, from a slow stumble to an outright dash. In Verruckt, the zombies seem more evolved, being able to reach through boarded windows and swipe at the character, and can hop on and off of window sills. It can also be noted that in Verruckt, some zombies march to the windows, as if marching with an army. Finally, in Verruckt, the Zombies seem to have evolved enough to attain the ability of speech, or at least, something that can be considered speech. The zombies are often heard shouting, "Damn,", "No!", "Die, Die!" or "Lets eat his soul!" and scream, laugh and moan more than just yell like in Nacht Der Untoten. Zombies that are seen marching and some with brighter Nazi bands on they're right arm (which sometimes is covered by a rolled up sleeve) are usually found to be carrying power-ups, such as Insta-Kill or Max Ammo.

The Hellhounds

The Hellhounds are an aggressive new enemy first encountered in Shi No Numa, and in Der Riese.

They are deadly canine-like monsters covered in flames that presumably come from another realm. They randomly spawn throughout the map (a ball of lightning will usually erupt whenever they spawn) every few rounds and their sole objective is to kill the player by streaking towards them and either attacking with tooth and claw or by exploding. The ground shakes whenever they spawn or explode. They are extremely lethal and must be taken care of as soon as possible.

It is possible they have something to do with Element 115, as they have only appeared on maps that contain it or have contained it. It is also possible they are controlled by a single entity as at the start of a Hellhound round an evil voice says "Fetch me their souls!".

On Der Riese, there are a series of radios that can be turned on, two of them have the sounds of dogs in them. One of them is a recording of an experiment on a dog, using some sort of electrical chamber. The people who are experimenting sound German (maybe Nazi Scientists that are experimenting on, and maybe even had started the zombie outbreak). After the experiment, one of the scientists (known only as Doctor Maxis) tells his assistant to open the door, the assistant hesitates, Maxis snaps back to him and the assistant opens the door. The sound of electrical swirls and a Hell Hound can be heard, afterward a little girl can be heard saying "Father, what are you doing with Fluffy?". Maxis replies with "Dammit, Samantha, I told you never to come in here!", shouts to his assistant to remove Samantha from view of the dog. Samantha screams at the sight of her dog(Formally known as Fluffy!). She says "What is wrong with her? Daddy, what did you do? Fluffy!", Before running off. Maxis replies "Come back here Samantha. Stop Her." Maxis runs after her, while saying "Easy, come here Samantha. Good girl. Gently Samantha, we must get out of here" (all through that sentence, the Hellhound seems to have got out of the chamber and is destroying equipment and windows.) Before Maxis and Samantha have a chance to get out of the room, the assistant seems to have locked the door behind him as he came out. Maxis shouts "Edward! What are you doing! Open the door! Edward! Open this door now!". Samantha cries "I'm scared". Maxis says to Edward"Damn you, stay by me Samantha". Then the assistant speaks "Goodbye, Doctor Maxis!" in a voice very similar to Doctor Richtofen. Gunfire seems to be heard before Edward laughs in a evil tone. After that, the message cuts out into static.

How exactly this one dog started the hellhound breed is unknown so far, but in one audio clip "you know she's pregnant?" is heard, presumably referring to the dog. It is also possible more tests on the hellhounds were continued by Edward, they multiply or that the first teleport test didn't just teleport them, but cloned them as well.

Strategies

  • The best gun for Hellhounds is the trench gun, as it is always a one hit kill. This has been tested up to and over round 300. The PPSh-41 is also extremely effective, and can also be used to hold off the Hellhounds indefinitely. The .357 also works just as well as the Trench Gun, especially in early rounds, although can be harder to aim at the fast moving Hellhounds.

  • If on a Hellround, camping is the best solution, either in pairs or a group of four. Shotguns and MGs are equally effective, while the Ray Gun is quite dangerous to yourself, as the dogs will often get very close and cause you to kill yourself with the Ray Gun's splash damage. Note that the Wunderwaffe DG-2 should be saved for Zombie rounds instead, as the area effect has little bearing on Hellhounds (although this is nullified by the fact that you get a max ammo power-up at the end of the round, so as long as you keep a full clip when the max ammo is taken, you can kill the hellhounds effectivly with the Wunderwaffe). If you do not have an MG or Trench Gun yet in the first Hellround, knifing them is rather easy (blindly tested, survived) you will get damaged, but if you continually knife in a corner, you should survive.

  • A fairly good camping spot on Shi No Numa is at the first mystery box spawn, just around the corner where the dogs can only come from one direction.

  • Another good spot is the little island to the left of the Comm Room (if facing the Comm Room) if the Comm Room isn't open, then there will be a good 3–4 seconds between dogs. If all the other rooms are open, there is around 10–30 seconds between each individual dog, giving time to reload, which is especially good if using the Browning M1919

  • It is sometimes good to move from one place to another.

  • The Hellhound picks a random target upon spawning, and will not deviate from that target unless it is downed. Because of this, if someone is standing with people blocking the Hellhound from attacking them, it will simply get stuck.

  • On solo, there is never more than 10 Hellhounds per round. Because of this, Bouncing Betties (if all are placed during rounds between dogs and none are destroyed) can be used to complete a whole Hellround.

  • Dogs will usually not go into the water if they don't have to. You can use this fact to funnel the Hellhounds.

  • Another strategy is to have a Sub-Machine Gun, (e.g. M1 Thompson, Type 100, PPSh-41,) and basically run and jump frequently around and shoot at the Hellhounds. This makes it very hard for the Hellhounds to get you because one, if you keep on jumping, it makes it hard for the Hellhounds to line up an attack, and two, if they do attack, they will likely miss since you have jumped out of the way. Also, when a Hellhound attacks and misses, it will usually stay still for a second before attacking again. You can use that precious second to your advantage and get an easy kill.

Zombie Theories & Trivia

  • The man hanging in Shi No Numa is missing his left arm, and in Verruckt there is a left arm on the lever that turns on the power, so the hanging man may have been at Verruckt before the American you play as there. It has been speculated by players that this could be Peter.
    • The hanging man is most definitely American because of his uniform and the leather leggings around his lower legs. That means that if the man is Peter, he is American.

  • The man talking on radio in the starting room of Shi No Numa mentions something about moving the experiment from the Asylum (Verruckt) to the Swamp (Shi No Numa), meaning it's possible that the man on the radio is one of playable characters in Verruckt.

  • The numbers at the beginning of the message are longitude and latitude coordinates for Area 51, and the numbers at the end of the message are the coordinates of the Tunguska event (a powerful explosion that occurred near the Tunguska River, said to be caused by a meteor) in Russia. It may be possible that someone from Area 51 was trying to contact Peter at Tunguska.

  • The number "115" in the transmission refers to the periodic table of elements. The element is Ununpetium, and it is found in meteorites, such as the one found near the Storage Hut Shi No Numa. The element is also the energy source for the Wunderwaffe DG-2, and might be what brought the Hell Hounds to the area and the zombies back to life.

  • If you touch the hanging man and go back to level one, the map may be a different color.

  • It has been speculated by some that Peter is Dempsey's first name, as Tank is just his nickname. If this is true, it means that Peter did received the message at Shi No Numa, and that would be the major reason why Dempsey is back at Der Riese.

  • In Verruckt if you look at the corner of the room with speed cola in it there is a mannequin with a rope hanging around its neck, exactly like the hanging man in Shi No Numa

  • The man on the radio Easter Egg in Shi No Numa might be telling Peter to find Doctor Rictofen and Doctor Maxis (Max).

  • The Hellhounds are the first and currently only enemies encountered in a Zombie Mode Game that aren't confirmed zombies.

  • In the map pack Der Riese some of the random recordings here and there(and yes you have to find them) announce some things interesting about the hell hounds and the normal zombies in the zombies series. How that the first hell hound was the haunted teddy bear, Samantha's dog fluffy.

  • The Hellhounds first appeared in Shi No Numa, and made a return in Der Riese.

  • The Hellhounds have several different appearances just like the zombies. Some are large and intimidating while others look frail and badly burned.

  • When killed with a headshot a Hellhound will explode.

  • The Hellhounds appear approximately every five rounds, although they are guaranteed to appear somewhere from rounds 4 to 7. After Round 7 this becomes a 50/50 chance. Note that if teams complete a Hellround, it cannot happen again for three rounds, at which point it returns to the 50/50 probability.

  • It takes three hits from a Hellhound to down you, even if you have Jugger-Nog.
  • Hellhounds have much lower health and are more vulnerable than the zombies of the equivalent round.

  • The last Hellhound will usually drop a Max Ammo when killed. One of the only times that it is not dropped is when the Wunderwaffe DG-2 is used. If no Max Ammo is received, the very first zombie that is killed in the next round will drop it

  • (Shi No Numa) When looking in the direction of the Comm Room from outside Storage, one will notice a meteor that makes an interesting noise. There is electricity around it, similar to the electricity visible just before a Hellhound spawns, and the surface of the meteor has a texture resembling that of the Hellhound's skin.

  • When the Hellround begins, an ominous tune, rumbling thunder and a demonic voice saying "Fetch me their souls!" can be heard. Also, the map turns foggy until the last Hellhound is killed.

  • Interestingly, the flaming Hellhounds can be killed by the M2 Flamethrower.

  • Hellhounds that aren't on fire don't explode.

  • Hellhounds, at least on Der Riese, attack certain players and wont switch between targets until the one their after is downed. (Note:Once the downed person is saved, the hellhound will return to their old target)

  • As the Hellhounds are faster than zombies, the zombies can down/kill you in two hits, but the Hellhounds can do this in three, rendering the Hellhounds and zombies equally lethal.

  • The name "Hellhounds" might be a reference to the term "devildog", a nickname for Marines. This is ironic as Dempsey says"The Devil's Dogs, no match for the US Marines!"

  • In Der Riese, hellhounds spawn without fire. They limp around until they find their target. When they find their target, the hellhound will catch fire and start running.

  • Hellhounds seem to have designated targets, as tested on Der Riese where one player split from the other 3, the majority of hounds would run right past the lone player, and attack their designated target, leaving the loner to only face a small number of hounds.

  • The Bowie knife is exellent at fighting off hellhounds especially on the earlier rounds as one slash can kill a hound up until the 3rd batch of hounds

  • The M2 flamethrower isnt a good a weapon for fighting off batches of hounds , whereas molotovs are exceptionaly good for killing up to 1 dog.

  • Several people have complained of nightmares because of the general look of the Hellhounds.

  • It is quite possible that the dogs are HYENAS, considering that on the chalkboards you can find the word hyena, and that on the posterboard there is a map of AFRICA.

  • In Verruckt-Der Riese, zombies say something that sounds like "Sam", which could reference Samantha, or simply "Damn" after being shot.
  • It is possible that the Hellhounds are also Zombies, just Zombie Dogs.
  • On Verruckt, when a player is downed, a zombie may do a Moonwalk, a reference to Michael Jackson's "Thriller". Zombies also make MJ sounds in Shi No Numa, like choo-cha!
  • On January 29, 2009, someone hacked into an American electric construction roadsign, changing it to alternate between displaying "NAZI ZOMBIES AHEAD!", and "ZOMBIES! RUN AWAY!!!!!". It is very possible that the hacker was referring to Nacht der Untoten, if not just combining Nazis with zombies, both of which are famous in popular culture. A few drivers actually thought that the dead came back to life and that the government was trying to warn everyone, while most just got a big laugh out of it.

  • Some Zombies are seen marching in a comedic Nazi fashion towards the windows in Verrückt.

  • It could be possible the Nazi Zombie levels pays a tribute to the European Nazi Zombie films of the 1970s and 80s, such as Zombie Lake, Oasis of the Zombies, Shock Waves, and so on. The Imperial Zombies pays a tribute to the horror movie genre "J-Horror".

  • Also, a mysterious noise will usually come out of nowhere and can be heard when a round is going to end.

What we know of the Story

In Shi No Numa, a radio message can be heard in the starting room by turning on three radios.

The message is:

"R-4808n 37 14 06 115 48 40. I hope that you are receiving this transmission Peter, if not then all is going to be lost. You must know by now that we failed to contain the Asylum and we had to move the experiment here. Location the numbers will guide you. The giant must remain (static) at all costs, repeat, Der Riese must remain (static) at all costs. The DG experiments continues. You're our only advantage now. Find Doctor Richofen (static is in this word, but it is still audible) and Doctor Max, they may know what's going on. The use of 115 is dangerous at best. I'm not sure how much longer we can continue here. We've lost most of our best people. I hope you get this. I hope I happen to be there too but I'm almost out of hope. 60 54 06.96 101 55 44.94."

The numbers are the coordinates of Tunguska and Area 51. Dr. Max is probably Dr. Maxis. DG experiments is a reference to the Wunderwaffe DG-2.

The asylum is the setting of the second level, Verruckt. 115 is element 115, an element found in meteors and known to power the Wunderwaffe.

The meteor containing 115 is shown in the map Shi No Numa outside one of the swamp areas.

In Der Riese, the creation of the zombies and hellhounds is explained.

Dr. Maxis was testing zombies and trying to control them. The problem was that they would always go berserk and try to kill him, resulting in their deaths.

He was also testing teleporters by sending zombies through them, but they never reappeared at the mainframe. All of these experiments were done with his assistant, Edward Advar.

When he used his daughter Samantha's dog, Fluffy, as a teleporter test subject, he accidentally created the first hellhound. The dog was teleported, but like the rest of the subjects didn't reappear at the mainframe. It did however reappear in a ball of electricity and mutated into a hellhound. When Samantha came running in and started questioning her dad about her dog, Edward left the room. Edward then betrayed him by locking him and his daughter in the room with the hellhound, which then killed them.

One of the characters, Dr. Richofen, has obviously been to Der Riese before and probably worked there. He knows about connecting the teleporters and about Dr. Maxis and Edward.

Map Descriptions

Nacht der Untoten

"You drove them deep into the heart of Reich. You thought they were dead. You were wrong."— Nacht der Untoten description

Nacht der Untoten
is the first map of the Nazi Zombies campaign. It is also the smallest and simplest. There are only three rooms in this map, which is based on a bunker and some of the land surrounding it in Airfield. The zombies in this map are less deadly than the ones in the others. This is the only map not to include perks, traps, and electricity. This map introduces the four power-ups that are seen in the other maps. Because it is a last minute developer addition, this map simply acts as an introduction to the Nazi Zombies game mode and does not advance the zombie story arc.

Verrückt

"Electroshock therapy. Chemically engineered beverages. Hordes of Undead Nazis. Find the power to unite and send them back to their graves!"
Verrückt description

Verrückt is the second map in the Nazi Zombies campaign. The zombies in it are more dangerous because they can attack through windows, climb through windows, and down you faster. This is the first map to include traps and perks, and bouncing betties. It is also the first map to require the electricity to be turned on. The map is based on Asylum. There are ten rooms in this map. This is the first map where the mystery box can be destroyed by the teddy bear and reappear somewhere else. This level takes place in Wittenau Sanatorium in Berlin, Germany. This is the only map to feature "sides". There is a German and American side, each with the faction's respective weapons. When playing with 3 or 4 players, they will be split up and have to reunite at the generator room. This is also the first map to introduce and objective-based gameplay, of sorts. It is possible that one of the soldiers here is the man that tries to contact Peter in the radio message.

Shi No Numa

"Maggot ridden corpses. Bug infested swamp. Hundreds of undead Imperial Army. Choose your tactic and defend for your lives!"
Shi No Numa description

Shi No Numa is the third map in the Nazi Zombies campaign, even though it includes Japanese zombies instead of Nazi zombies. There are five main buildings in this map and four unlockable swamp areas connecting these buildings. Four of the buildings contain only one room, while the main building has two. This is the second map where the electricity doesn't have to be turned on. This is the first map where the perk machines spawn randomly and the second map where the mystery box can explode and reappear. This is the first map where the players can walk outside of buildings without glitching or cheating and have zombies spawn next to them. This is the first map with a zip line and introduces hellhounds. This map also fleshes out some of the backstory. This is the first map to include completely new content; and not based on a map built into the game, although it takes some design cues from Makin and Knee Deep. This is also the first map where the identities of the players are known. This level takes place in a swamp somewhere in the Pacific. This map introduces a new weapon, the Wunderwaffe DG-2, an electricity-casting weapon that can destroy waves of zombies at once.

Der Riese

"The Giant is rising. Face the might of the Nazi Zombies in their heartland. This is where it all began. This is where the master plan took shape. Is this where it all ends?"
Der Riese description

Der Riese is the fourth map in the Nazi Zombie campaign. It is takes features from the maps Nightfire and Corrosion. It is the first map where zombies can climb over areas and jump down from an area towards the characters. It introduces Pack-a-punch machine, which for a fee, upgrades weapons to have increased ammo capacity, more power, etc. It is the second map where the power is required to be switched on. It is the third map where Perk-a-cola machines are included, and the second where perk machines do not spawn randomly. It is the second map to have hellhounds. It is the first map to have teleporters, the first where you can acquire the Monkey bomb and the bowie knife, and the first to have the fly trap and is the third map to feature Nazi Zombies, it is also the first map to feature zombies and hellhounds spawning in the same round once you reach round 16. It is the second map where the identity of the characters are known, and the third to advance the plot. It is the second to have a small objective, which is turning on the power and connecting the three teleporters to the mainframe to access the Pack-a-Punch machine.

Perks-a-Cola Machines

Perks-a-Cola machines dispense one of four different perk-flavored drinks: "Juggernog" (additional health), "Double Tapper" (faster rate of gunfire), "Speed Cola" (faster reload, also rebuilds boards faster), and "Revive!" (faster teammate revive).

You can buy them anytime after the electricity is turned on, and the perks last until the player gets knocked down by a zombie.

Players must traverse zombie-infested rooms and hallways to collect them - a huge risk, but one that provides the player with a great reward.

Character Bios

Tank Dempsey (USA)

Tank Dempsey: American hero. Give him a loaded weapon, a good woman, and something to shoot at and he’s happy. Cross him and he’ll rip your guts out and use them as a bandolier. Dempsey was selected for this mission after he showed his true grit at the battle for Peleliu. His unit was captured during the early raids before the main invasion, and he spent 2 weeks in a rat infested bamboo cage submerged in malarial water. Eventually, he gnawed his way through the cage, and then gnawed his way through his captors armed only with a Bobby pin and his Medal of Honor which he keeps secreted in various body cavities. There is no before the war for Dempsey, there is no after. There is only the legend of Tank Dempsey, and how he won the war for the rest of us.

Leaving behind a wake of destruction and meat sacks wherever he goes, Dempsey is the man to have on your side when faced with an undead apocalypse.
Nikolai Belinski (RUS)
Stalin himself cannot stare Nikolai in the eye, no one can. For in his eyes you see the soul of a man burning with a hatred of all things living. His closet is full of skeletons, many of them with the flesh still attached. Before the war, Nikolai quickly made his way up through the party ranks by killing the next man in line, and by marrying politically. His aspirations all came crashing down after his fifth wife mysteriously died while cleaning Nikolai’s axe with her neck. Little did he know that she had been sleeping with a high ranking party official on the side. After her tragic demise, Nikolai’s reputation spread quickly through the party, and it wasn’t long before Stalin himself had heard about the psychopathic politician who killed anything that came within 5 feet of him. As soon as the war started, Nikolai was dropped at the front line and forgotten about, where he wallowed in self pity and Vodka for several years.

With many weapons in his arsenal, not least of which is his breath, Nikolai Belinski can look death in the eye and say “I know you”.

Takeo Masaki (JPN)
Tattooed on the inside of Takeo’s eyelids is the Japanese proverb “Life is light when compared to honor”. For Takeo, life has no meaning if not to perfect one’s discipline and to reveal a warrior’s true character and honor. He ponders this and other philosophical questions as his Katana slices through the flesh and sinew of his enemy. Takeo was born into wealth. His family dynasty dates back several centuries, and throughout that time they have been highly decorated Samurai and Bushi. Takeo is no exception to this celebrated bloodline. When the family first saw the young, life-filled 5 year old Takeo playing in the street with his Katana and slicing the tails off terrified kittens, they knew he was destined to bring honor to the Masaki name. The war was a perfect opportunity for Takeo to explore his bloodlust and study the nature of those less honorable than himself. If you fall victim to his swift action and might, know that you have helped a man better than you reach enlightenment.

Doctor Richtofen (GER)
Beware The Doc. This message was scrawled across walls of every town under Axis control. Starvation may cripple you, dysentery may wreck you, and gunfire may rip the flesh from your bones, but Beware The Doc.

Meet Dr. Richtofen, known affectionately as The Butcher to his victims as they scream in agony moments before he snuffs out their light. Throughout his career, Richtofen has always been at the forefront of torture and information extraction research. Before the war he was a back alley plastic surgeon, who created an army of monstrous affluent Weimar socialites that would follow him around and laugh at every joke the genius doctor made. This all fell apart when the republic fell and the Nazi party took control. To Richtofen, their values were too moral, too liberal for his liking. He joined the army so he could satisfy his need to watch people die, slowly.

An incurable sociopath, he sees no moral distinction between natural death and murder. The victim is the victim, regardless of how their demise manifests itself.

He has a collection of stuffed animals, most of them posed in positions of terror at the instant of their death.

Pack-A-Punch & Weapons List

The Pack-A-Punch is a weapon modification machine available on the Nazi Zombie map "Der Riese" on the COD: WaW Map Pack 3.

You can use PaP for 5000 points, it is only available once you have linked all 3 teleporters to the Mainframe.

What it does is, it takes your weapon and upgrades it to do more damage and fire power, it also changes the look of the weapon and the bullet color.
